She set out to keep her seat on a train when a conductor decided her paid ticket didn’t count, to tell the truth about lynching in print when telling it plainly cost her a newspaper, a city, and nearly her life, and to build herself a seat in rooms that would rather have kept her standing in the hallway outside them.

This is her story told sideways—through four ordinary people who each crossed her path at a different turning point in her life: a schoolgirl who learns what plain truth can cost, a grocer’s clerk who watches a lie outrun the facts, a young typesetter who helps carry her words further than either of them expected, and a stenographer who learns what it costs to build a room and then walk out of it on principle.
